Reasons why you should start an online business

Imagine it’s Monday morning.

You’re well rested, prepared for the week ahead and, get this, excited to get to work.

After spending years in a job working for someone else’s agenda, it’s now your turn to focus on what you love and work in a business you’re passionate about — YOUR OWN.

This kind of freedom increases exponentially when your business is online.

The freedom feels so good.

Students ask me all the time whether they should start an online business. I genuinely believe that most people can (and should start an online business). 

Here are the 15 reasons why you should start an online business…

1. An Online Business Is Super Easy To Start

Starting an online business is the easiest business to start because you can learn everything you need to know about it online.

You can also get started by following steps from someone who already did it by taking a course. You can take my Free Online Business Course, and I’ll show you how to do just that.

There are courses, step by step guides, and YouTube videos covering this exact topic that you can begin right now.

2. There’s No Big Expense Up Front

Operating a business from your computer means there is no brick and mortar expenses that you need to shell out money for.

You likely have everything you need, including wifi and a cell phone, so there’s no need to let a lack of money keep you from creating your online business.

I started my online business first when I had six figures of law school debt! There was no way I would’ve been willing to start another business and invest more money into it. An online business was perfect. I invested a very small amount, and as income grew, I was able to pay off my student loan debt and invest more in my business.

The expenses you accrue from purchasing a domain and a hosting site fee will pay for themselves one hundred times over.

Online business is really the least expensive business you can ever start.

 

3. You Have Complete Flexibility Over Your Time

With starting an online business, one of the best parts is the complete flexibility over your time.

I think you have to hustle to get to six figures, but seriously, you’ll want to!

Working on your business is super fun. I would work from coffee shops or while traveling. You can’t beat it!

The elusive 4-day work week is no longer something you have to dream about. 🙂

 

4. You Can Start Your Business About Something You’re Passionate About

To run an online business takes patience, but more importantly, it takes passion.

You will be spending a lot of time with this endeavor and it’s going to be like your baby.

That being said, it’s completely possible to start your business centered around something you’re passionate about.

The good news is there are SO many things to choose from. I talk about how to choose what to start your business about in my Free Online Business Course.  I highly recommend taking that. 

I am super passionate about money, personal development, online business, etc. so I made the choice to combine all of them into a thriving business model.

I love running a business I’m passionate about.

If you’re passionate about what you start your business in, you will love running your own business as well.

Even the things that aren’t so exciting about running a business will ultimately be very important to you, because you know they’re part of the bigger picture that helps your business thrive.

Don’t settle and start a business about something you think will be popular or make money.

Consider your future and what you want your business to look and feel like and go from there.

 

5. You’ll Constantly Learn And Grow Outside Your Comfort Zone

Starting an online business means getting outside your comfort zone.

Outside of your comfort zone is where growth happens.

In other words, it’s where all the good stuff happens!

Something I teach a lot about is mastering your mindset, and part of that is getting outside your comfort zone. If you’re not already listening to my podcast, you definitely should. It will help with this!

Through all of this growth, you will learn so much about running a business and about yourself in general.

When you start to grow as a person, you will need to consistently shed your identity to become someone new.

I have a completely different identity than I did when I started my business.

The more you lean into this process of shedding and growth, the more success you’ll have as an entrepreneur.

There are so many things to learn and to master in business. It’s super fun.

The subject matter of your business — hopefully your passion — has endless opportunity for you to learn new things and incorporate those learnings into your business.

This helps you as a business owner and it will help your marketplace ie. your clients.

By constantly learning, growing, and pushing outside of your comfort zone, you will never be bored and always be working towards a better version of yourself and your business — how exciting is that?!

 

6. If You Have The Desire And You Take Action, You Can Actually Get Results (You Don’t Have To Be Super Smart)

Every day I wake up and run my successful online business that I started from scratch.

I was not an expert, but I became an expert through trial and error and always being very curious.

I’m not a rocket scientist and I don’t know everything, but my desire to do it, my willingness to figure it out and my drive to action means I’m consistently seeing results.

The fear of not knowing shouldn’t keep you from starting something that you have the passion and work ethic to begin.

With no formal education, you’re able to put yourself into whatever role you want without climbing a career ladder and invent a brand you believe in.

Don’t indulge in “I don’t know,” take action and you will see results (more on learning how to take action when you don’t know how in this podcast).

 

7. The Market Isn’t Too Saturated

One of the biggest questions I get is, “is the market too saturated to start an online business?!”

The answer is no!

The market needs new ideas and information to keep up with modern day.

Don’t let fear of getting lost within the market scare you from following through on something you’re passionate about.

There are ways for you to narrow down your market.

Some of my absolute favorite books on this topic are Dot Com Secrets and Expert Secrets by Russel Brunson.

Seek out people who are doing something in the field you’re interested in and let them inspire you to take action.

Before they had their business idea, they were in the same place as you — just starting out.

 

8. It’s Super Fun

When was the last time you had fun at work?

Work doesn’t have to be boring or serious or stressful.

It’s so fun when you get into that flow state and have a clear vision for what you want for your business.

You’re able to wake up and feel excited and grateful that you get to do something you love and believe in every day.

Even better, you get paid to do it!

 

9. You Can Use Marketing To Drive People To Your Online Business

When creating an online business, marketing is a very useful tool.

You don’t need to be super popular or have a big following on Instagram to make money online.

The great thing about the internet is that billions of people have access to it.

Consider where you will find your ideal client.

Are they mainly on the internet, Instagram, etc.? Where are they shopping and hanging out?

Be deliberate about where you want your online business to be seen, and then create the marketing plan that helps make that a reality.

Listen to these top online marketing podcasts for the best information on how to market your online business.

If you’re not well versed in marketing, listen to podcasts, read books, and do your research.

Marketing can help multiply your sales and eventually grow your business to exactly where you want it to be by driving your ideal clients to your online business.

 

10. There Is A Formula That You Can Use And Learn To Be Successful

Online business isn’t a mystery, it’s a puzzle (listen to this Online Business Puzzle podcast where I explain the complete online business puzzle).

Once you learn the formula to starting an online business, you can no doubt learn to be as successful as you want.

Once you put all of the pieces together, it’s impossible to forget. You have the skills forever. 

This is why it’s important to learn about online business from the pros. You can quite literally save years of your life.

Remember, I wasn’t born into a family of entrepreneurs. I always wanted to be a lawyer. I quit practicing law, quit my second career as a financial planner, and built my business to multiple six figures, all from being self-taught.

I can’t say enough about learning the online business formula and applying it in the right way. The problem is there is so much misinformation out there. Don’t fall into this trap!

11. The Income Potential Is Unlimited

Owning my own online business means that my income potential is unlimited.

Yep, that’s right.

I once had dreams of making $5k per month. Now, I make over $20k per month, with dreams of making seven figures.

Every time I reach a new level of income, I become the person I need to be in order to bring in more money.

I repeat this process over and over again with the results to show for it.

Not having a cap on how much money you can make is so exciting and makes all the work you’ll do 100% worth it.

 

12. The More Money You Make, The Less You Work

The only thing better than making more money is having to work less when you do.

To be clear, your goal when you first set out to start an online business shouldn’t solely be to not work.

Why? Because it takes a lot to get from $0 to six figures. And I mean a lot. 

But the amazing thing about online business, unlike practicing law or another profession, is that the more money you make, the less you work.

You can quite literally create an online business, build it up to six figures, then start scaling where you grow your revenue and work less. The main way you can do this is through working with a team. This is the phase I’m in right now, and it’s super fun. 

I plan to work three days per week and have a small team and grow my revenue to multi seven figures. I don’t know another profession where you can do this.

When your business works for you, there is less need for you to be putting in unnecessary hours.

 

13. You Don’t Have A Boss

When you own an online business, you’re the boss.

You report to yourself and the market (your client or customer) holds you accountable to deliver.

Freedom to be your own boss is something people work their entire careers for.

It’s much more fun this way.

There will be no more office politics and you get to choose what work you take on.

There’s never a feeling of just putting the time in and taking part in someone else’s dream.

Every decision you make is 100% yours to make.

Being your own boss gives you the flexibility to live your life in a way that suits you.

 

14. You Don’t Have To Have A Product Or Service To Get Started

There are many ways for you to make money in your online business the right way without needing to have a product or service to offer.

This is what I did by first starting a blog, which is why it’s what I teach in Blog With A Full Time Job, my online business course.

I kept my full time job while I slowly put the foundation of my business together.

I didn’t have a product or service to sell.

Now, it’s my full time gig (and now I have products that you can see I sell in My Store). 

Don’t let uncertainty keep you from starting. You can create your products in time. It doesn’t have to be right away.

One of the most gratifying things about running your own business is creating a product or service that you are passionate about. When you spend the time creating something meaningful, you’ll find that your customers get passionate about it too.

Take your time and don’t rush to get something out to the world before it’s ready.

 

15. You Can Make A Huge Impact In The World

You can create an online business where you help people, so you not only make money, but your work is work of service.

This is what I do and it’s so fulfilling.

I don’t do this for the money. The money is cool. But it’s not the real reason. I do it to contribute to the world. To change people’s lives. There’s nothing better than that for me. 

To do work that you’re passionate about that helps people is what makes all your hard work and long hours that much more worth it.

 

A Final Note!

If you’re on the fence about starting an online business, give yourself the gift of making the decision. Set a deadline and decide. Then take action. 

And if you’re asking me, the answer is YES — you most certainly should start an online business.
