I make between $2k – $4k per month blogging. And this year, my goal is to at least double (hopefully triple) that number.
And it’s not just me who is doing this. Lots of bloggers publish “income reports” where they share their monthly blog earnings. Some bloggers are making upwards of $100k / month – yes, per month. Insane, I know!
I was making next to nothing from affiliates last year. Then, I took Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing and it changed everything.
In Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing, I learned how to increase my income through affiliate sales by completing the 8 steps in the course.
Here’s a look at what I learned, so hopefully it helps you, too!
1. What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is getting paid for selling other people’s products. So, if you (as a blogger) sell someone else’s blog course and that person has an affiliate program, you get paid a percentage for the sale.
It’s totally awesome because you don’t have to create the course, eBook, or whatever yourself. The downside is you don’t have creative control. If they stop selling the product or remove the affiliate program, you don’t make money. But you can diversify and have lots of affiliates so this doesn’t have a huge impact on you.
2. How do you find and apply for affiliate marketing programs?
You can start promoting affiliates through people you know. For example, I know Jessi Fearon, who is an amazing blogger and friend, and I love her course Real Life Money Plan, so I promote this course and it’s a great affiliate for me. Similarly, Grayson Bell does all my tech work and he created a company and has an affiliate program to go with it. I can’t think of anyone I trust more to do my tech work, so I’m happy to promote iMark Interactive.
You can find affiliates through platforms that specialize in connecting bloggers to affiliate programs, like CJ (Commission Junction) or eJunkie. Amazon Associates is another one you can join right away and link to anything on Amazon to get affiliate income.
3. What disclosures to include on your site
There are certain disclosures that you have to have on your blog and on certain pages and posts if you are an affiliate marketer. For example, the Federal Trade Commission requires that you disclose if any of your links are affiliate links. Some bloggers do this by putting a disclosure at the top of each post.
4. How do you get readers to convert (i.e. buy)?
To be successful at affiliate marketing, you have to have a strategy that gets your readers buying what you’re selling. The more important component here is to be genuine and confident in what you’re selling. Only promote what you can vouch for. Only sell what you use. This makes selling 100 million times easier!
5. How to promote affiliate links
How to go about promoting affiliate programs is complex, but worth your time. You can do it through your email list, on social media, or through paid advertising. Trial and error is the key here!
6. How to maintain your affiliate marketing strategy
I use Thirsty Affiliates to house all my affiliate links. I highly recommend using something to keep track and organize all your affiliate links in your blog.
7. What not to do
There are many don’ts that you need to know before you start monetizing your blog with affiliate links. I’m not going to go through all of them here (you can get a handy checklist in the course), but just know that they exist and you should be careful to always be genuine!
8. How to kick-start making money through affiliate marketing
The key to making money with affiliates is to have a long-lasting strategy. This includes everything from tracking your progress to using Pinterest and social media strategically to make money from your affiliate links.
A Final Note!
