Do you dread waking up early in the morning to go to a job you hate? Or maybe you wish your job had more flexibility so that you could travel, hang out with friends and family, or just sleep in every once and a while. Well, thankfully you live in the 21st century where blogging is a real job that you can do from your house. Just imagine working for yourself – from home – in your pajamas.
Even if you love your full time job or current career trajectory, 90% of people out there could use some additional income for travel or for better meeting your financial goals like savings and retirement. Don’t have time to get a second job or start a side business? What if you could generate income on your own schedule?
This isn’t a pyramid scheme and you don’t have to sell anything. You can make money just by being yourself.
This is all possible by mastering the art of being a blogger.
How to Blog Yourself Rich: The Crash Course
After having success with my own personal blog and brand, I wanted to give back and share what I know with readers. I want you to know that you can build a blog that is successful – financially and otherwise.
Everyone has a story to tell. This is why your blog can be successful even with so many other blogs out there – no one is you. You’re unique and you can build a business around your own uniqueness.
It won’t necessarily be as easy as blogging about your thoughts or your day, you will have to provide value and market yourself. But if you do it right, you can have enormous success.
This is where my five-step process comes in. I created a five step process whereby I shows you exactly how to blog yourself rich (as I call it). You can also access the full version in my Blog Yourself Rich Workbook, the first six pages of which I will send you for free.
Step One: Zero-In on a Topic that Lights You Up
First thing before you ever write one word is to find your blog’s topic. You may be tempted to use your blog as a digital diary, but if you do that it will be hard for you to attract (and keep) an audience. You will have much more success if you are focusing on providing value to your audience. So, your first task is to find something that “lights you up” – something that you’re so passionate about that writing about it wouldn’t be considered work for you.
Once you know what you want to write about, you’ll need to answer some key questions to help you focus your content and social media efforts. Questions such as:
- What is going to set you apart from the thousands of other bloggers out there?
- Who is your audience?
- What does your audience like to read?
- Where do they hang out online?
Do this research upfront. You won’t regret it! Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint.
Step Two: Build a Website and Magically Become Tech Savvy Overnight
In step two I want you to build a website and magically become tech savvy overnight. I’m only kidding about the second part of the previous sentence, although I won’t lie, becoming a blogger comes with a steep learning curve if you’re not already fluent in “internet.” Building a living, breathing website is a bit more of an in-depth process that includes things such as domain hosting, themes, and figuring out WordPress.

The good news? There are tons of resources out there to help you master WordPress, HTML, Blogger, and social media. No experience or fancy schooling necessary.
Step Three: Create (and Curate!) Content
Next, it’s time to focus on the creative stuff – the content that you want to write! Before you begin writing, pitch yourself a few topic ideas. Think about what types of posts you would like to provide readers with.
One of the most important things to do is create a content calendar. This means you schedule out what you are going to write and when that is going to be posted to your blog. This might not seem like something to worry too much about, but having your content planned in advance can make all the difference, especially when juggling a blog and a full-time job or family. Having a content calendar allows you to work ahead and schedule your pieces for specific dates as well as giving your readers something to look forward to.
It also isn’t enough to simply create content. You should be curating content of other people you like, respect, and admire for your social channels. Being on social media can’t be all “look at my blog! Look at me!” all the time. In order to become a truly powerful online influencer, you also need to be known for finding the best stuff on the internets and delivering it right to your ideal reader’s laps.
So, get writing!
Step Four: Attract Readers
Now it’s time for you to get some readers. Speaking of readers…how do you grow your audience? I believe you can grow your audience primarily though social media. The more unique and authentic your brand is, the more people will engage with you on social media. Your blog should have a unique voice – people know when it’s you talking. This voice needs to be consistent across all of your social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest (and whatever the next big thing is!). Using these platforms will allow your readers to keep up with new posts, comment, and share with their friends! It is important to keep these all up-to-date, so consider using a scheduling tool like Hootsuite so you can plan tweets and posts out in advance.
Step Five: Monetize
After you have successfully completed steps one through four, it’s finally time to monetize your blog. It’s important to go through the first four steps so you’re ready to monetize. It’s a big mistake to do it too soon. Even after you try to monetize, you likely won’t make too much money initially, but if you keep at it and love being creative and interacting with others online, the money will follow. Blogging can actually be incredibly lucrative if you work at it.
You can make money as a blogger through a number of different sources, including ad networks (like Google AdSense), sponsored posts (collaborating with companies), affiliate networks (getting paid to recommend other people’s products), selling your own digital products, or freelance writing (writing for other blogs).
A Final Note!
Let’s recap. I believe that if you need to make extra money (for whatever reason), you can do that right from your own home, by starting a blog.
I’ve created a five-step process that shows you exactly how you can blog yourself rich, as I call it! The process is:
- Find your passion (that you’ll write about)
- Start a blog
- Provide valuable content
- Build your audience
All of this is just scratching the surface of running a professional, legit, money-making blog. I go through the full process in Blog Yourself Rich – a workbook that I’m so proud of because it is already helping bloggers breakthrough and make a living online.
